Two-term Republican Rep. Jefferson Burton is bowing out of his re‑election bid, saying he’s moving outside the Utah House district he’s represented since 2023. He announced the decision on Facebook on Monday.

“Serving you has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Burton wrote, after noting his 37 years in the U.S. Army and National Guard and his stint in the governor’s cabinet.
His exit leaves two Republicans—Matthew Durant and Jackie Larson—to vie for the nomination at the Utah County GOP convention. Neither is collecting signatures, so the convention winner advances—and with no Democrat filing for the race, will face no opposition in November.
Burton becomes the 14th House member to skip re-election this year. Two of them, Reps. Jill Koford and Doug Fiefia, are running for seats in the Utah Senate.
