Ben McAdams is back
Former Democratic Congressman Ben McAdams sat out 2022 and 2024. He's not sitting out 2026.
McAdams joins "Special Session" to talk about his decision to get back into electoral politics with a run in Utah's newly drawn 1st Congressional District—the Salt Lake County-centered seat created by a judge's ruling last month.
McAdams represented the old 4th District from 2019 to 2021 after defeating Mia Love in what was then the most Republican district in the country to flip to a Democrat. Before that, he served as Salt Lake County Mayor and in the Utah State Senate.
In our conversation, he talks about what's driving him back into the arena, how he plans to navigate a district where Democrats are the largest voting bloc but still only make up a quarter of registered voters, and what happens to his campaign if the legislature successfully appeals the new maps.
I also asked him directly about lingering anger from some Democrats over his role in the 2022 U.S. Senate race, when he pushed for the party to clear the field for Evan McMullin.
